Product Description
Crane Cams XR700 For Lucas helps to convert your points-type distributor to an electronic ignition with these Crane XR700 ignition modules. They offer increased timing accuracy and replace many Bosch, Lucas, Hitachi, and ND units. They feature an all-new status LED light for easy diagnostics and are fully potted for protection from dirt, moisture, and vibration. They're also highly reliable and precise, with their optical trigger design, and have a more powerful signal than points-type distributors.Crane Cams 700-0300 XR700 Points-to-Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit for Lucas Points Distributor Review
I bought this to convert my "009" points distrubutor on an air-cooled VW vanagon. The kit comes with four or five different optical wheels, plus various brackets and things to fit a wide range of distributors. Unfortuantely, I only needed a couple of those parts (but obviously paid for all the rest, which went directly into the trash). The other problem with the fact that this thing is designed to work on a huge range of distributors, is that it may not work on any particular one perfectly.
Initially, I had a very difficult time getting the optical wheel to slip down onto the distributor shaft--even with lubrication. I was worried I would break or deform the little plastic thing... When I finally pushed hard enough, it slipped all the way down and I couldn't get it back up. I ended up having to disassemble the distributor in order to try again.
To make matters worse, the optical sensor won't fit in after the wheel has been installed, so it has to be guided down along with the wheel. In fact, there's really not enough room for the sensor at all. I had to grind about an eighth of an inch off of the circumference of the wheel so that it didn't rub on the mounting screw of the sensor. I also had to file some of the distributor cap down so that it wouldn't hit the top of the sensor.
I did finally get it working though... It just wasn't very easy...
