HJC Razz Men's CL-16 Sports Bike Motorcycle Helmet - MC-5F / X-Large Review

I needed (wanted) a new helmet, and had heard good things about HJC. I've been wearing this helmet now for 9 months (with Dark-smoke visor / clear PinLock, and Clear visor with Amber and clear PinLock combinations), and here is what I can tell you about it:

Pros:
- SNELL rated/certified for added sense of security
- Price is well below others with similar features and SNELL rating
- SNUG fit, but not tight after the first few wearings (interior molds to YOUR head)
- SNUG cheek-pads - Very stiff at first, but they mold to your face shape, and prevent side-to-side motion (like they should)
- Good ventilation, even in 100-deg weather (not quite A/C ventilation, but "good"), and when vents are closed, you know it!
- PinLock inserts are the BEST anti-fog system I've ever used
- Visor(s) are clear and distortion free
- Wind-noise is moderate at highway speeds
- Helmet weight is equal-to or better than others I've owned - very comfortable to wear all day
- Quick-release visor mounts make swapping visors a 30-second job
- Visors fit flush and snug, blocking all wind (as they should), and also have a lock feature to prevent visor from opening accidentally
- Liner is easily removed for washing and airing-out
- Graphics are not "cheap", and have not scratched or damaged from bug/rock strikes at highway speeds
- Excellent offering of accessories such as breath-box, chin-curtain, colored visors, and colored PinLock inserts (reasonably priced)
- Plenty of room to mount intercom system, and even includes Velcro pre-mounted to aid in securing wiring - works great with my Scala Rider G4/G9 communicators!

Cons:
- EPS foam liner comes down too low on my ears, causing them to pinch/curl/fold at the top, which can be uncomfortable
- Speaker (pockets) are open at the bottom, and allow you to catch your ears behind them sometimes as you put the helmet on
- Mounting plates for visors are held by cheap, plastic screws. Once out of alignment, visor ratcheting and fit is awkward and frustrating at best.
- Visors scratch VERY easily, PinLock inserts, even more so!

HJC helmets fit my head perfectly, but the slight curling of my ear-tips can be annoying at times. Because of the snug-nature of the helmet (out of the box), break-in period took much longer than my other helmets... it did not begin to feel "right" until after two weeks of daily wearing (20-30 hours).

The only real design flaw I can find on the CL-16 helmets is the mounting plates for the visor's quick-release mechanism... I have not had an issue with mine, but my son's helmet (and have heard of others's with this issue) began having a problem out of the box. Attempting to align the plates is an easy thing (loosen 5 screws, align, tighten), but the screws used are cheap plastic, and they do not hold their position well (or break off), thus causing the plates to move as you raise/lower the visor, which causes the visor to not fit properly, and makes it difficult to open/close the visor, period. Sending the helmet back to HJC was a pain for my son... had to get proof of purchase from the seller, obtain RMA from HJC, ship helmet (at his cost), and wait weeks for them to inspect, repair/replace the helmet and return it... and now his replacement is doing the same thing....

UPDATE: I will say the visors do scratch easily, but do not shatter! I took a rock to the shield at 65mph last week. The force was enough to "feel" the impact... the shield does have a nice splatter-shaped scratch, but DID NOT SHATTER OR CRACK!
