Jeep Wrangler 1987-2006 Exterior Mirror Kit Mopar OEM Review

About a year ago I bought a set of aftermarket mirrors to replace the original mirrors on my Wife's 2001 Wrangler. The after market mirrors looked very nice when new but had two major problems. First the passenger side mirror had a standard flat mirror, not convex like the factory style. I decided to live with that though after a while I realized that was a mistake. The second problem was that after one winter the mirror material on the rear of the glass was flaking around the edges. After only 1 year on the Jeep they were getting pretty bad. When my son hit a mail box and broke the drivers side mirror I decided it was time to ditch the aftermarket mirrors and go back to OEM.

The original mirrors from 2001 had their own problem. Namely that powder coating pealing off the cast mounts. I decided to give the newer style (2004 and up I believe) mirrors a shot. When I first started looking at this kit most placed wanted around $200. I shopped around and found this set for about $100. I was a bit skeptical that I would receive another set of aftermarket mirrors even though these were being advertised as OEM. I was very happy to find that these were indeed OEM Mopar mirrors.

Other than their shape being different than the 2001 mirrors there is one other notable difference. The mounts and arms are plastic not cast metal. Now some may think this is a negative making them less durable than the older cast style, but I believe this to be a positive. These will not have their powder coating peeling off a few years from now and have a corroded casting left behind. I have a 1998 Cherokee that I wheel hard and the mirrors on that are plastic and have been smacked into a lot of things and are still in one piece. If these mirror mounts are made of a similar composite I'm sure they will outlast the Jeep.

There is one thing I will note. On this Jeep we are running aftermarket stainless door hinges. Because of this the mirror mounts don't completely cover the hinge as I believe they would with the factory hinges. The hinges are thin enough it doesn't seem to affect the stability of the mirror but I thought I'd mention it so anyone reading this would know about it. I of course do not fault Mopar as the hinges are not OEM so I didn't change my star rating for that.

One final thing, I was very happy to find the boxes marked Made In USA.
