Badlands M/C Products Badlands Illuminator Pro III Metric ILL PRO III M Review
If you have an old school, mongrelized sled like mine, with momentary turn signal switches on the right and left, that you have to manually pulse to make a indication of changing lanes or a turn while operating the bike, then this is the module for you.You will need to know basic electrical circuitry to install this item. The instructions are a bit convoluted, as the target audience is for, supposedly, european bikes. I've seen much worst (China), so do what I did: read them carefully and map out your system to their diagram (take your time; I took about 3 days of nights, and made SURE of what I was doing). You will also need a very good understanding of your bikes electrical wiring, especially if it has been altered. Not trying to scare anyone; All your really doing is 'telling' the module to activate the bulbs - really very elementary.
As advertised, this is the module suited for custom sled applications. It is open wiring (no connectors installed; I never used the ones included! - would have liked to save purchase price $$$ for the option to exclude them) in order to interrupt the signal switch sources to the actual bulbs, and in doing so, gain extra stop and running light, and emergency functionality. Pretty damn cool compared to what I had.
The size of the thing is an absolute shock. It's only ~ 3" x 1.5" x .75" (maybe, not including the mounting tabs). The pictures make the thing look like a project box over twice that dimension. The wiring seem a bit thin, but then, this is pulse width modulation, my friends - everything you own now is powered by this technology (I've been at it for nearly 30 years now). Not as much total current is being transmitted.
One thing I would design differently, would be to have a programmable time, or at least, choices; 11 seconds for me is way too short. Maybe, encode the input for different situations: one pulse = 11 sec (change lanes), two quick pulses (45 second - lights are much longer that that), three pulses = keep on until further notice (like standing at a left hand lane not being noticed by the road sensors).
The package is rugged by encapsulating it in potting material (no, not like for growing flowere - idiot). And, mounting can be easily done with wire ties. Mine is tucked neatly under and between my 'bobs' (no doubt what I'm ridin', eh?).
So, this would be five star, if it were not for the instructions and the time. I am, otherwise, ecstatic to have automated my ride - very cool.
