2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 Saturn Vue Cross Bars OE Style Fast Shipping Review

I purchased this same kit from another source. The quality out of the box looks OK and it matches what would be installed at the dealer. After reading many reviews, the common theme was that the instructions were terrible and they are. The set I received were illegible. I promptly searched a Saturn forum and found better instructions with clear photographs (use this link for those instructions: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showpost.php?s=5a02707295a3eb31ccd181f2c6c9141e&p=945429&postcount=9). After looking at those instructions and the parts included with the kit, I figured out what needed to be done. Here is a quick synopsis:

1. Assemble the bars and the brackets first. You may have to shave the holes in the racks so the bolts fit easy. Remove the plastic end caps on each bracket to expose the mounting holes for the bolts. There are 4 small black bolts with allen key heads and 4 stainless steel nuts. Insert one of these bolts with a supplied lock washer into the bottom hole of the rack (the top of the rack is the part with the rubber strip) and screw that bolt into a nut that fits perfectly into the underside of the bracket (from the top of the bracket, its the hole that would be closest to the center of the roof when looking from above - the other hole in the bracket is oval and that's where the mounting bolts for the roof go). Use LockTite or an equivalent on the bolt and tighten with the supplied allen wrench. You will repeat this for the other side and the other rack. Note, as the allen wrench does not give you much leverage to tighten the bolt securely in my opinion, it might be a good idea to use a plier on the allen wrench to tighten those bolts a little more. Be careful not to go too crazy or you may crack the plastic bracket.

2. Once the 2 racks are assembled, you're ready to install them to the roof. You can install the rear portion of the rack in 3 different positions, you do not have this choice in the front. Each bolt in the top roof rail is given a number, 1 thru 7 (there are 7 bolts that hold the roof rail on). Position 3 is where the front mounts and they recommend position 6 for the rear (dealer installed racks used this spot, but you can use position 5 or 7 too). With a T25 bit, remove the 3rd bolt from the front of the roof rail on each side. Be sure there is no water collected in the roof rail holes or it will enter the roof. In the kit, you will find 8 weird looking hex head bolts, 4 long, 4 short. Each have threads leading up to a threaded hex head. The 4 long hex bolts will mount into the roof (I'm not sure this is correct, however, I did it this way because a small part of the bolt head was visible once it was tightened making it easier to line up the other bolt from the bracket). With an 8mm socket, screw in a long bolt with a flat washer and some LoctTite applied to the treads into the roof. Saturn recommends torquing this bolt down to 66 ft/lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, just make it as tight as you can without crushing the washer. Repeat this for the other side at position 3.

3. Now that both mounting screws are installed in the front, make your way to the rear and install those. Position 6 is the recommended spot for the rear bar. It spaces the bars with 3 feet inbetween them. Position 6 is the second bolt from the rear. Again, remove those bolts with a T25 socket and then install a long hex bolt with a flat washer and thread locker and tighten to spec.

4. With all 4 mounting bolts installed, you are ready to install the bars. Position one assembled bar for the front. Thru the oval hole you can locate the roof mounting bolts. Insert a short hex bolt and flat washer into the bracket. In addition, use one flat washer on the underside of the bracket as well (it's like you're sandwiching the bracket mounting hole with a washer on each side). The bolts are long enough where you can see them to line them up to the hole in the head of the mounting bolts you installed in the roof. Be sure to use LockTite on the bracket bolts too. Once you have started the bracket bolt into the roof bolt, go to the other side and do the same, do not tighten it at this time. Once both sides are loosely secured, center the rack on the roof rail and tighten each bolt. Again, be careful not to overtighen or you will crush the flat washer and distort the plastic bracket. Repeat this for the rear bar.

5. Now having installed both bars, install each bracket center cap. Slide a cap into the center of the bracket lining up the top of the cap, which contains a set screw, so it slides into the rack's bar. Once it's in place, tighten the set screw with the allen wrench and cover it with the rubber strip. Repeat this for all 3 remaining brackets.

This took about an hour once I figured out what parts to use and I had parts left over, some extra washers and 4 Philips head bolts, along with the 4 Torz head bolts I removed. I bagged them up and put them in the glovebox. I'm not crazy about how this mounts to the roof, so I will probably replace the mounting bolts in the roof and bracket with one longer bolt adding a steel plate under the bracket so the plastic doesn't distort or crack with the torque from the bolt. I figure they designed it this way so you can remove the rack and install it back when needed without having to put back the Torx bolts back to seal the hole. In my opinion, it's too much work to remove so I would just leave it on all the time.
