Throwbacks and retro lids are nice, but nothing beats an original. Back in 1954 Bell founder Roy Richter formed his first helmet out of fiberglass and named it the "500." That moment was ground zero for the modern motorsport helmet and it gave rise to an entire industry. Bell's new Custom 500 pays homage to Richter's original design and adds modern protective technology to bring the design up-to-date while still keeping the original's aesthetic. By combining a custom fiberglass layup with a specially designed EPS foam layer, Bell engineers were able to craft a helmet that is at once light weight, narrow in profile, and DOT-compliant. Adding custom paint-inspired graphics, chrome trim work (on some graphics) and a quilted liner, the new Custom 500 custom looks as good as it performs.

The helmet fits perfect on my head and it's really comfortable. Double D closing system rules! I have a H-D and it gives me exactly that old bad-a$$ look I was hoping for! Being an open face you'll need glasses or goggles. Best is to buy a shield, productor's site has the best, especially if you're looking for some vintage looking. The helmet resists well the highway but shields make air pass between the clip buttons and the helmet itself, so glasses AND shield usage is suggested, especially with cold weather (yes I do ride with temp on the 30s F). I've read of a whole lot of people complaining about the helmet slipping backwards while highway rding, guys, please, it's an open face! Plus, if you buy it in the right size (and of course every head is different) it behaves perfectly. Mine does at least! Highly satisfied!
